 Brenna
"I Need a Guardian Angel"
Meet
pug #67/08 Brenna, a 12 yr old pug saved from a shelter in PA. She
has received all shots and is going to the vets for her dental,
and possible spay and evaluation. She has a weak back end. We
will have more information on her soon. She is incredibly sweet,
so far housetrained and loving! Her adoption fee if adoptable
will be 100.00 due to her age.

Hi to all, just an update on
Miss Brenna. She is quite the little old lady. She wibbles quite
a bit, she seems blind, or very close to it. Her eyes are dry
and they look like they have that funny pigment that is dark
brown in them. We put artificial tears in them for now. You
cannot see her pupils at all. She barely c an hear you and
certainly cannot be left alone even for a minute as she wanders
aimlessly around until you put your hand on her, or walk very
close to her so she can follow you.
She is still the sweetest, most pleasantly demented pugaroo that
I have ever met, and she is a love bug. She loves to be held,
and loves people to just touch her. She sometimes paces, and
when I reach out and put my hand on her she stops and relaxes.
She has one tooth on the bottom right and two teeth on the
bottom left, so you can imagine she has a long tongue that hangs
out on the right. She is eating well seems more interested in
the people of the house more than the other dogs. She is
sleeping with us.
Going in to the vets soon for more vet care. Stay tuned.:)

Ike is a 4 year old Pug with epilepsy. He is on Phenobarbital &
Potassium Bromide to help control his seizures. He does still have
seizures from time to time. Sometimes they are mild other times he has
cluster seizures. I am still in the process of trying to figure out
what might trigger him to have seizures. He also takes melatonin at
bedtime to help him sleep and possibly help to control night time
seizures. He is on California Natural Lamb & Rice small bites. A high
quality food such as this without a lot of preservatives and such that
could trigger seizures. He has just recently been to the Vets to have
his blood serum levels checked, & a chemistry panel to check his liver
& heart worm test. These results are not in yet. Ike is not completely
housebroken. He needs to be watched closely or he'll go out and come
back in without doing his business. I have to go out and stand with
him at times just so that he will go potty and he needs to learn a few
house manners. Toilet paper is so yummy! So is the occasional chair
leg! He is a loving little guy and likes the company of other pugs. I
would recommend anyone interested in adopting Ike to first talk with
your vet about epilepsy and to do research first. A good web site is
http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/site_map.htm . there is
a lot of info there and elsewhere on the web.
Due to his condition Ike should not be let outdoors unless he is
fenced in or closely supervised. I would recommend a fenced in yard
and a quiet home where someone is home most of the time. knowing that
one can not be home all the time and occasionally Ike might be left
alone, then he needs to be protected from stairs and objects that
could be dangerous if he were to have a seizure. Less stress is best.
Even though Ike loves kids it might be best if he were placed in a
home that did not have young children as it could be scary for a young
child to watch a seizure episode. Ike requires special attention and
devotion. He will need certain testing done on a regular basis to
monitor his medication levels and to check for liver damage from the
use of Phenobarbital.
_The cost involved: . Phenobarbital will average between $4.00 and
$10.00 per month. Potassium Bromide will average between $7.00 and
$17.00 per month. The costs will depend on the amount of the drugs
needed to maintain control.
_blood serum levels of the medication should be tested every 6 to 12
months. The costs of the lab work will vary from veterinary clinic to
veterinary clinic but will average about $35.00 for Phenobarbital and
$50.00 for Potassium Bromide levels.
_For dogs taking Phenobarbital to control seizures a chemistry panel
should be done every 4 months to be sure that the liver is functioning
properly. The cost will average about $40.00. These are estimates
only.
Ike is welcome to stay here with us as long as he needs. He can be a
challenge but in this house hold we are use to challenges. He is
certainly a lovable young man as we certainly love him. If you would
like more info on Ike please call (802) 888-0020
UPDATE 1/4/2008
It's been awhile so I should update you on Ike. I'll start off with
his meds. Ike is on 1000 mg of Potassium Bromide 1x day, 32.4 mg
Phenobarbital 2x day, 2mg Thyroxine1x, (this is for his thyroid),
Pancreazyme, 3 pills with meals, this is so that he will digest his
food. Since last summer his pancreas hasn't functioned proper and his
food was just passing through him. without any benefits. He is also on
S-Adenosyl, 1/2 a pill 1x daily. This is new and is for proper liver
function. Dr. Goodson gave us a bottle @ no charge to try. We started
him on it but I but took him off as he had a stomach upset. Not sure
if it was from this or not. I am going to try him again. In his last
blood work there wasn't anything that really jumped out. His liver
enzymes were elevated which can be expected because of the
Phenobarbital, this is where the S-Adenosyl would help. Also his
panaceas enzymes were slightly elevated. Ike is also on a digested low
fat prescription diet.
Ike continues to have seizures. He went almost 4 weeks at one point
and I thought maybe we finally hit upon something but it didn't last.
He usually has seizures every 2 weeks sometimes 1 a week. He had a
spell yesterday in which he had a cluster of 5. One of which lasted
longer than it should have. Scared the $%#@ out of us. He finally came
out of it. He usually will have clusters/ gran mal but they are quick.
I know when he first arrived from Kansas he had a Status which lasted
for almost 20 minutes. This one did not last that long. Maybe close to
five minutes which isn't good. We kept ice on him and I was about to
rush him to the vets but then he started to come out of it. He had one
last one and then slept in my arms for quit awhile.
In between seizures he is mostly normal. Normal as Ike can be. Ike is
a happy, goofy little guy. I'm sure he has some slight brain damage
but nothing that affects his quality of life. If nothing else it makes
him happier. Thank God that I have such a wonderful husband. He gets
up with Ike in the mornings. Ike is a early riser , usually between 4
& 5 every morning. Most mornings are not a problem as Brian has to get
up at 4:45 anyhow but he gets up with him on weekends also. Of course
once Ike is up he wants food and will act like a little kid and whine
and whimper and run around until it's breakfast time. Then everyone
else is up too. If we get to stay in bed until 5:30 - 6:00 it's like
sleeping late. :o) However Ike is a good boy, he loves a good pug
pile, he very rarely has accidents in the house anymore. We do have to
watch him outside since he has had pancreatic trouble he eats everyone
elses poop so we have to keep the yard cleaned on the spot. He will
also eat things that he shouldn't. So it's a constant vigil to keep
the yard cleaned up of pinecones, sticks, and such. having the ground
covered in snow makes it easier. We are thinking of clearing some
trees this spring so pine cones & needles aren't in the dog run.
